We all know how good running makes you feel (seriously!), and we’ve all heard how it positively affects our own health. Well, in 2013 we are encouraging all the competitors in the Vineyard Half Marathon to Run for a Reason and raise money for a charity. So now running will not only make you feel better, it could help someone else.
Every year children in New Zealand undergo 100000 treatments and procedures for cancer, and three children are diagnosed with cancer each week. Eight out of ten of those children diagnosed with cancer and treated with contemporary anti-cancer therapy can be cured in New Zealand, which is good news…and you could just about be the next bit.
This year the charity we will be working with is the Child Cancer Foundation. Their mission is to ensure that every child and their family will never feel alone as they walk the child cancer journey. They aim to reduce the impact of cancer by ensuring that children and their families are supported, informed and well cared for. The Foundation also supports and funds the education of health professionals and their research into child cancer. They receive no money from the government or from any cancer charities, so we thought we should do something to help.
At Registration and on Race Day we will have a team of dedicated photographers shooting images of you all doing your thing. Those photos will be uploaded onto our Flikr account during the day and beyond and will all be available for you to freely download. If you wish to download a couple or all of them you can either have them for free, or you can make a donation to our Fundraise Online site. Its not compulsory but we think its a nice way to help those children and their families out.
You could raise money yourself by going to our homepage and clicking on the Child Cancer Foundation link, or you could just click http://bit.ly/Run4aReason and follow the link to set up your own fundraising page. Ask friends, family and others to sponsor you to complete the Vineyard Half Marathon. Its not only a great way of raising funds for a charity but its also a great personal motivator, knowing that you will help someone else by simply finishing the Vineyard Half.
