Two of our 2019 trainers, Megs and Soph are putting together a series of tips, tricks and training programmes for our lovely entrants. Here are a few of their handy tips for getting started with training this new year:
GET A TRAINING BUDDY
This way you HAVE to show up for training because someone else is relying on you too show up too. It goes both ways and you can motivate each other. Schedule your workouts in with your husband or parents if you have kids so they know what you’re doing and can help look after the kids or even (if you’re lucky) cook you dinner!
SET SPECIFIC DAYS AND TIMES TO TRAIN
By setting an exact day to work out you can plan ahead so your prepared to go for a run on these days. Sometimes life gets in the way and you can’t do it on your desired day, don’t worry just make it up another day but if that’s not possible don’t sweat it either. One missed session is not the end of your training programme nor is two but still don’t get in a habit of justifying missing training either.
GET YOUR WORKOUT IN EARLY
Again if possible we recommended getting your workout done early in the day. You’re more motivated early, higher willpower, you feel fresher (although sometimes might not feel like it after rolling out of bed), you are more productive throughout the rest of your day.
MAKE IT FUN
Maybe you’re struggling to get going after the holidays, so a good way to get excited about your workouts is to do something you enjoy. Definitely helps to get the spirits lifted and back in the groove of things. i.e. go for a run around your block then crank on your favourite song, loud, and have a boogie out on your lawn or lounge, get the family or flatmates involved for some laughs as well.
INVEST IN A COOL DIARY OR WALL PLANNER AND START PLANNING
Writing down your goals, making it bright and colourful, counting down the days and crossing off session feels so damn good! Using a wall calendar/planner you can easily see your goals and use that as extra motivation. Using a diary you can keep track of how your feeling, what session you’ve completed, record your times etc.? p.s. we hear our good friend @goaldiggersnz has an awesome wall planner #shamelessplug #supportlocal
SHARE YOUR GOALS + ASK FOR THEIR SUPPORT
With someone, this could be your partner, your personal trainer, a close friend, family members, use them as an accountability coach. When you’re feeling down or unmotivated tell them. Like they say a problem shared is a problem halved so this should take a bit of stress or worries off your shoulders. They should also try to encourage you that you can DO IT. One step at a time. Share with us on Instagram, we absolutely LOVE hearing how your training is going and want to support and encourage you as much as possible!! @megsandsoph
If you’ve participated in the Saint Clair Vineyard Half Marathon before and have some go-to training tips, feel free to share them with us via Facebook or Instagram.
